Cyclone Winston in South-East Queensland

Summary of Article

This article is based on a disaster that occurred in Queensland, Australia on Friday, February 19th. The cyclone known as "Cyclone Winston", was seen coming about 850km off the South-East shore of Queensland at around 4pm. Most beaches on the shore were closed, as the strong force of the cyclone could be felt in the water. Though it isn't expected for Winston to come within 400km of land, there were waves seen up to four meters high off the Gold Coast Beach and others. The high tide and incredibly strong tide will make the likeliness of beach erosion more probable. Residents are strongly advised to stay off any beaches or coastlines until conditions are significantly better.  Though it is unlikely for the circumstances to improve over the next few days.

What I Took Away from this Article

Natural disasters are some of the worst tragedies that occur in our world today. They rob people of their homes, families, and even their lives. There have been attempts made to prevent them, but almost always end in failure, or with little success. Earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, tornadoes, cyclones. All are forces of nature, all are beyond our control. But there are ways to protect yourself. Not all are guaranteed, but may increase the chance of your surviving in the disaster. Before cyclone/hurricane season arrives, check with your local council if your house has been built to cyclone standards. If it has been in fact storm proofed, this will minimize the impact.Be sure to have a least a weeks supply of food, and stay indoors at all times;unless you have been told that it is necessary to evacuate. You must also except the fact that there may come a time when you must abandon your house for safer ground.
